Samsung C&T Construction Division has received official technical certification from the Korea Concrete Institute for its precast concrete special moment beam-column dry connection method. The structural system secures high-level seismic performance while simplifying the assembly of precast concrete columns and beams on site.
The development supports Samsung C&T’s Next Home residential model, which relies on a column-free frame layout so residents can freely reconfigure living spaces within individual apartments. Because the model removes internal load-bearing columns, building stability depends entirely on the strength and safety of the joint connections where external columns and beams meet.
Standard frame structures are classified into ordinary, intermediate and special moment frames based on seismic tolerance. High-rise developments require joint performance exceeding intermediate moment frame standards. Intermediate moment frames must maintain structural safety under a 2% floor height deformation, whereas special moment frames must withstand a 3.5% deformation threshold.
Dry connection methods in precast concrete involve joining factory-made elements directly on site. Because forces transfer directly to reinforcement bars at the joint, achieving high seismic ratings with dry connections has historically presented technical challenges. To solve this, Samsung C&T created a mechanism that integrates a steel bracket with bolt fastenings, earning an intermediate moment frame certification in 2024.
Following structural refinements and joint shape optimisations, subsequent testing confirmed the system meets special moment frame requirements. The result marks the first time a precast concrete dry connection method has earned special moment frame certification from the Korea Concrete Institute.
By replacing wet on-site concrete pouring at connections with prefabricated steel brackets, the system lowers construction times and improves quality control for high-rise residential builds.
Byun Dong-kyu, Head of the Housing Technology Innovation Team at Samsung C&T, said: “This certification is highly significant as it officially recognises the realisation of the high seismic performance required for PC frame structures using practical dry joint technology. Going forward, we will continue to lead the transformation of the construction business through Off-Site Construction (OSC) and create unrivalled value based on differentiated technology and quality.”
Samsung C&T plans to expand off-site construction methods across its residential portfolio.
