Marriott International has officially opened Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, marking a new addition to the Selegie arts and culture district. The 128-room property is situated at the junction of Selegie Road and Mount Sophia. It stands on the former site of the Selegie Centre and aims to act as an urban oasis within the historic neighbourhood.
The hotel design was led by the architectural firm FDAT. The structure takes inspiration from local shophouses and incorporates sky terraces and lush greenery. Inside, the guestrooms are available in light and dark colour palettes. Design details include patterns inspired by chendol and lamps shaped like dim sum baskets. These elements reflect the childhood memories of the hotel owner who grew up in the area.
“Varel Singapore embodies everything Tribute Portfolio represents – captivating design that tells a story, vibrant social spaces that bring people together, and a genuine connection to the local community,” said Cristiano Rinaldi, Chief Lodging Product & Services Officer, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International.
The hotel features four dining outlets. Hathaway Autograph serves Southeast Asian cuisine while Vernacular Coffee operates as an artisanal roastery. Guests can also visit Saga Bar for cocktails or the rooftop pool bar. Service at the hotel includes local touches such as gelato from Denzy Gelato and tea from TWG upon arrival.
General Manager Andy Tan commented on the service philosophy. “For us, Sincere Service is about the moments guests remember long after they leave,” said Tan. “We have shaped the stay detail by detail, working with independent local makers and adding handmade touches that carry a sense of genuine care. Even the way we introduce guests to the community – through simple ‘makan’ walks and heritage experiences – is part of making this area feel welcoming and worth exploring, with the ease of a well-connected address.”
The property is located near several MRT stations including Little India and Dhoby Ghaut. This provides easy access to Orchard Road and Marina Bay Sands. As part of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio, the hotel allows members to earn and redeem points during their stay.
