MERED, the international real estate developer, has joined forces with Herzog & de Meuron to unveil the design for its latest project, Riviera Residences, set along the waterfront of Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi. The collaboration marks a major milestone for the island, bringing a distinctive architectural identity to one of the UAE capital’s most sought-after districts.
Herzog & de Meuron, recipients of both the Pritzker Prize and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, have an extensive portfolio that includes some of the most recognised buildings of the past two decades, among them the Tate Modern in London, 56 Leonard Street in New York, and the Beijing National Stadium. With over 600 projects spanning more than 40 countries, the Swiss firm is celebrated for its emphasis on context, sustainability, and craftsmanship.
Riviera Residences will comprise more than 400 modern apartments and 12 exclusive villas, including sky villas, ocean villas, and a penthouse. The architects drew inspiration from Abu Dhabi’s rich pearl-diving past, a theme reflected through the building’s mother-of-pearl façades designed to capture and reflect natural light.
The project places nature at its centre, featuring landscaped gardens, green spaces, and tree-lined pathways. Residents will have access to four swimming pools, a fully equipped fitness centre, dedicated yoga and wellness areas, and recreation zones including a padel court and table tennis. The development also includes an ice bath facility and indoor and outdoor lounges fitted with fireplaces and family spaces. A promenade lined with cafés, boutique retail outlets, and fine dining restaurants will overlook the sea and the Al Reem skyline, offering direct access to the island’s beaches.
Al Reem Island, home to international schools, advanced healthcare facilities, and premium offices, continues to attract strong investor demand. Off-plan property prices increased by 38% year-on-year in Q2 2025, highlighting ongoing confidence in the island’s property market.
The Riviera Residences are expected to launch in November 2025, with MERED describing the development as a statement of architectural excellence and coastal living. The partnership with Herzog & de Meuron aims to bring a new level of design sophistication to Abu Dhabi’s waterfront skyline.
