Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, working with fund manager Invitalia, has completed the full allocation of the PNRR Water Fund (SFNIISSI) in less than four months.
A total of €1.55 billion has been distributed across 59 water infrastructure developments spanning 17 Italian regions. Southern Italy has been awarded approximately €830 million, representing 53% of the total funds. This allocation comfortably surpasses the 40% minimum quota designated for the region under the national plan.
Public funding is supported by an additional €683 million contributed directly by project beneficiaries. This extra capital brings the total investment figure to over €2.2 billion, which will be used to build safer, more modern and more efficient aqueducts and water distribution networks.
The rapid distribution of the funding was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini, who noted the measure’s strength in mobilising further regional co-investment. The ministry’s core strategy since the start of the PNRR framework has been to assign every available euro to prevent capital lying idle. With the allocation phase complete, focus turns toward speeding up construction to deliver finished works.
This scheme forms part of a wider commitment by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to guarantee long-term water security. Related initiatives, including the National Water and Sanitation Plan (PNIISSI), have already planned and financed more than €6 billion in water projects across Italy.
