State motorway operator Autobahn GmbH has selected engineering firm Arup to lead the masterplanning for a major overhaul of the Leverkusen motorway junction.

Forming a joint venture with Obermeyer GmbH & Co. Kg, Arup will act as lead designer on the scheme. The project focuses on modernising and expanding the interchange connecting the A3 and A1 motorways, which ranks among the oldest and most heavily congested road junctions in Germany.

The joint venture will deliver a comprehensive planning scope. This covers route alignment, drainage systems, bridge structures, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, environmental planning and regulatory approval processes.

Several existing structures across the interchange are scheduled for replacement. The scheme also features the design of a new bridge spanning roughly one kilometre, which will reshape the local area surrounding the BayArena stadium.

A major element of the contract involves managing construction stages and traffic flows alongside Autobahn GmbH. Project planners intend to keep vehicles moving through the junction while key structural components undergo demolition and replacement.

Alongside operational goals, the planning team will focus on integrating the expanded road layout into the surrounding city environment. Through coordinated demolition, construction and logistics planning, the joint venture aims to reduce disruption across the city of Leverkusen and adjacent transport routes.

The appointment draws on Arup’s established track record in managing large-scale, complex transport infrastructure developments.
