International construction group Skanska has signed a major transit deal in a joint venture with Stacy Witbeck to construct the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project in Van Nuys, California.

The agreement with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) forms part of a total contract valued at USD 1.9 billion. Skanska will record its share of USD 957 million, which equates to roughly SEK 8.9 billion, within its third-quarter US order intake for 2026.

Under the agreed terms, the project requires the construction of a 10.8-kilometre ground-level light rail line positioned along Van Nuys Boulevard. Plans also call for a 10.5-hectare depot and maintenance facility, alongside 11 new stations featuring shade structures and required utility relocations.

The East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project aims to expand the local Metro network by linking densely populated neighbourhoods directly to the wider rail network of Los Angeles County and surrounding areas. Operating along busy Van Nuys Boulevard, the new light rail line will connect with Metro’s existing G Line bus service, bringing upgraded public transport links to local communities that previously experienced limited access to rail travel.

Construction activities on the site are already underway. Project managers expect overall completion by December 2031.
