Global integrated logistics firm Maersk has officially inaugurated its largest contract logistics facility across the Asia Pacific region, the Maersk Mega Distribution Centre (DC) in Malaysia. This significant development increases the company’s total warehouse footprint in the country by more than 30%.

The new Mega DC is a multi-client facility designed to handle a wide array of goods, including fast-moving consumer items, food and beverages, footwear, and apparel. The massive site offers a total floor area of nearly 180,000 square metres and provides 100,000 pallet positions for storage. This hub stands as one of Maersk’s most important investment milestones in Asia Pacific and ranks among its largest contract logistics sites worldwide.

KS Chang, Head of Maersk Contract Logistics Asia Pacific, highlighted the importance of the new hub: “This facility marks one of Maersk’s most significant milestone investments in Asia Pacific and stands among our largest contract logistics sites globally. This hub reinforces our integrated capabilities to deliver reliable, flexible supply chains and modern, automated solutions that will help customers scale and reach local consumers more effectively.”

Strategically situated in Shah Alam, the Mega DC benefits from direct connections to major transport routes. These include the North-South Expressway (PLUS), ELITE Highway, and Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS). This key location ensures fast access to central industrial zones, urban areas, Port Klang, and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, thus optimising transit times for customers. It is also approximately 340 kilometres from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, which serves as Maersk’s main transshipment hub in Asia.

The Malaysian Minister of Transport, YB Anthony Loke, noted the wider implications for the nation: “The opening of this state-of-the-art facility will further boost the broader logistics and supply chain landscape in Malaysia. The connectivity of Maersk’s Mega Distribution Centre is critical to enabling efficient movement of goods across the country and the region, aligning with Malaysia’s Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan and bringing us closer to making Malaysia the ’Logistics Gateway to Asia’.”

The facility is crucial for quick and dependable distribution throughout the Asia Pacific region. It enables seamless warehousing and last-mile delivery, connecting cargo from international ports and airports directly to retailers and consumers. Daily trucking services connect major domestic cities such as Ipoh, Penang, Johor, Malacca, and Kota Bharu. Flexible transport options via sea, air, and land provide efficient access to East Malaysia and the wider Asian markets.

Operational excellence has been prioritised through technology investment at the Mega DC. The facility incorporates several state-of-the-art automation systems. These include Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), Put-to-Light (PTL) technology, and an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). These advanced solutions allow for faster order fulfilment, reduced lead times, and improved order accuracy by minimising potential human errors. An end-to-end transport management system is also in place, providing oversight of real-time tracking and monitoring of shipments for enhanced visibility.

The centre offers both bonded and non-bonded warehouse storage options. Customs officers are available on-site, which ensures speedier import and export clearances, reduces cargo dwell time, and allows for quicker goods release. A broad range of value-added services is also available, including tagging, labelling, re-packing, palletising, returns management, quality control and product disposal. The site is equipped with Maersk’s Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) capabilities. These systems provide customers with real-time inventory and transaction visibility, enhanced traceability, and possibilities for technological integration with existing customer systems. Furthermore, the facility holds Green Building Index (GBI) Gold and LEED Gold certifications, featuring solar panel rooftop installations, smart LED lighting and rainwater harvesting solutions to reduce energy and water usage. Comprehensive safety systems, such as forklift safety features and 24/7 CCTV surveillance, are also installed.
