Accor has confirmed the signing of Sofitel Genoa Waterfront, a landmark project set to open in 2027 that will introduce the brand’s signature French art de vivre to one of Italy’s most historic port cities. The luxury hotel is being developed in partnership with AG Group, the country’s leading integrated tourism operator.

The new hotel will comprise 120 guestrooms, including 20 suites, and will merge French sophistication with the maritime heritage of Liguria. Its design comes from the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), the studio led by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, whose notable works include The Shard in London and Paris’ Centre Georges Pompidou. Orion and CDS Holding SpA are also involved as investors and developers, with the project forming part of the wider Waterfront di Levante regeneration.

Facilities will include an all-day dining restaurant, lobby lounge bar, pool bar, spa, gym, swimming pool and two meeting rooms. Its location is set to benefit from improved transport links, with high-speed rail due to connect Genoa and Milan in just 53 minutes by 2026, while also providing convenient access to destinations such as Portofino and the Cinque Terre.

“Italy is one of Sofitel’s most important markets in Southern Europe, and the opening of Sofitel Genoa Waterfront marks a milestone in our growth strategy, after the success of Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese. We are delighted to partner again with AG Group to bring a new icon of French Zest and luxury to Liguria region, where rich history and vibrant culture meet the Mediterranean spirit,” said Maud Bailly, CEO of Sofitel Legend, Sofitel, MGallery and Emblems.

AG Group, established more than two decades ago, is recognised as Italy’s first integrated tourism company, with operations spanning hotels, restaurants, destination management and consulting. The group already manages a portfolio of premium properties across Rome and other destinations, and has worked with leading international hospitality brands. For the Genoa project, AG Group was identified as operator through the advisory work of Harry Mills Sciò, CEO of Fortvny, a boutique firm specialising in hotel consultancy.

“We are proud to join forces with Accor to bring Sofitel to Genova. This project not only reinforces our commitment to luxury hospitality in Italy but also showcases our dedication to creating destinations that blend cultural heritage, world-class design, and memorable guest experiences,” said Andrea Girolami, Founder and President of AG Group.

With this latest signing, Sofitel continues to strengthen its Italian portfolio, where it already operates a flagship property in Rome and has additional developments underway in Milan, Venice and Palermo. Sofitel Genoa Waterfront will be the city’s first true international luxury hotel, entering a market traditionally led by independent operators.
