The Shanghai Grand Opera House will officially open its doors to the public on October 17, 2026. Construction teams are currently finishing the final stages of the landmark project. Organisers have confirmed that the inaugural performance season will run through to February 20, 2027. This opening festival will showcase 82 high-quality performances across 47 acclaimed productions. Further details regarding the specific opening night programme will be made public closer to the launch date.
Norway-based architecture firm Snøhetta won the original international design competition back in 2016. Following this success, a formal consortium was established in 2019 to deliver the building from initial concept to completion. This development team includes Snøhetta, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI), Theatre Projects and Nagata Acoustics.
The new building serves as a world-class performing arts venue and a civic destination. It features three state-of-the-art auditoriums built to accommodate various performance types, sizes and genres. A core architectural feature is the sweeping roofscape, which provides 24-hour, year-round access for the local community. The project aims to bring creative professionals and members of the public together under a single roof, which helps solidify Shanghai as a prominent international centre for cultural exchange.
Reflecting on the milestone, Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Founding Partner of Snøhetta, expressed his pride in the project. “It is incredibly rewarding to see this remarkable project approaching its opening. Watching such an ambitious vision become reality has been special. Soon, the building will belong to the people of Shanghai and its visitors, whether they come to experience a performance or simply enjoy the building and its surrounding park. I hope it will become a place that inspires, brings people together, and stands as a new landmark for the city.”
