Phu Quoc is set for a historic transformation as Sun Group begins work on a vast 5-star “hotel city” ahead of the APEC 2027 Summit. This ambitious project aims to deliver approximately 12,000 new rooms and serviced apartments in just 18 months. The expansion is expected to nearly double the luxury accommodation currently available on the island.
On 28 January, the Phu Quoc Special Administrative Zone People’s Committee and Sun Group officially started construction on two major sites. These are the Bai Dat Do (Ruby Beach) Mixed-Use Urban Area and the Ong Quan Mountain Eco-Tourism Mixed-Use Urban Area. Both are part of a wider list of 21 projects approved to support the upcoming diplomatic summit.
The Ruby Beach development is the centrepiece of this plan. Spanning 88.4 hectares with a total investment of VND 64,000 billion, it sits on the APEC Avenue axis. The site will feature 15 beachfront hotels offering 6,500 rooms. Once finished, the island’s total luxury stock will reach 16,500 rooms. This will provide enough space for up to 15,000 international delegates and heads of state.
Several global hospitality brands are involved in the project. Marriott International is bringing brands like W Hotels and Westin to the area. Hilton Worldwide will introduce Conrad Hotels & Resorts to Vietnam for the first time. Accor will also manage sites under its SO and MGallery brands. Additionally, Lotte is set to operate a massive 136,000 square metre shopping centre.
Sun Group has a reputation for meeting tight deadlines on large projects like Van Don International Airport. This 18-month schedule is tight, but the developer remains confident. Beyond the summit, the project is intended to be a long-term legacy. Officials hope the new “hotel city” will become a world-class destination similar to the iconic spatial axes found in major global cities.
