Nordic hotel operator Scandic has announced its expansion into Freiburg as part of an ongoing growth strategy across Germany.

The company has partnered with pan-European real estate investment manager IREMIS to reposition an existing hotel property in the city. Under the agreement, IREMIS has acquired the real estate from the previous owner, while Scandic has signed a long-term lease to operate the hotel.

Located directly opposite Freiburg main railway station and adjacent to the Konzerthaus congress venue, the property sits close to the city’s historic old town. Freiburg is situated in southwestern Germany near the borders of France and Switzerland. The city maintains a strong reputation for research, healthcare, green urban development and university education, making it one of the top hotel markets in the country.

The hotel will undergo a comprehensive refurbishment process before welcoming guests. Plans include a full renovation of all 219 rooms, updated meeting facilities spanning approximately 480 square metres, redesigned dining areas, a bar, parking and renewed wellness amenities.

“This is an important step in our continued German growth journey and a clear example of how Scandic can create value together with new property partners. Freiburg is a resilient and attractive city with strong year-round demand, and the hotel’s location gives us an excellent platform to establish Scandic in a new German destination for both business and leisure guests,” says Jens Mathiesen, President & CEO of Scandic Hotels Group.

The company plans to operate the site under Nordic Swan Ecolabel certification, incorporating energy performance standards and sustainable material choices into the redesign through its Room Collection layout model.

“We are open for business with partners who share our ambition to develop strong hotel assets in attractive destinations. This project shows how Scandic’s operating platform, brand strength and sustainability focus can help reposition an existing hotel into a competitive, future-ready product,” says Jesper Engman, Chief Development Officer at Scandic Hotels Group.

Scandic Freiburg is scheduled to open to the public in autumn 2027.
