Construction has officially commenced on the civil aviation component of Phan Thiet Airport following a groundbreaking ceremony held on 27 April 2026. The project represents a total investment of over 3,900 billion VND by Sun Group Corporation. Located in the Mui Ne ward, the development aims to establish a new air link for the South Central Coast region and is scheduled for completion within two years.

Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh attended the event and praised the collaboration between the government and the private sector. He noted that Sun Group has already demonstrated its capability through the successful operation of Van Don International Airport and the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport.

The new domestic airport covers nearly 75 hectares and is planned to meet 4E standards. This classification allows the facility to operate modern wide-body aircraft. During the first phase, the airport is expected to handle a capacity of approximately two million passengers per year.

At the heart of the site is an 18,000 m² passenger terminal. The architecture takes inspiration from the indigenous Champa culture, specifically the Poshanu towers. The design features a 13-story dome and an upward-pointing triangle motif intended to symbolise vitality. This cultural approach marks the first time a Vietnamese airport has integrated historical layers of Champa civilisation so deeply into its functional design.

The technical specifications include an aircraft apron with six parking positions for both Code E and Code C aircraft. A 45-metre air traffic control tower will be equipped with modern navigation systems and weather observation technology. While the airport will primarily serve regular domestic routes, it is also designed to manage irregular international flights to support future global tourism.

Sun Group Chairman Dang Minh Truong stated: “Phan Thiet Airport is not just an infrastructure project, but also the starting piece for the large-scale tourism – resort – aviation ecosystem that Sun Group aims to invest in Lam Dong in the coming time. Thereby, contributing to forming a new development space, promoting service and logistics industries, and enhancing investment attraction capacity for the entire region, while also creating convenient travel for local residents.”

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and attract further investment into the local hospitality and logistics sectors. This development will make the province the next locality in Vietnam to house two airports, significantly shortening travel times from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
