Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) and Crown Asia Chemicals Corporation (Crown Pipes) signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding on 21 October to lower carbon emissions and reduce PVC construction waste across the Philippine building sector.

The initiative centres on a PVC pipe cuttings take-back program alongside the development of ESG performance criteria for green suppliers. Under the take-back scheme, scrap materials from selected ALI development sites will be collected, segregated and returned to Crown Asia Chemicals for recycling or repurposing. Both companies plan to track the amount of waste diverted from landfills and consider expanding the recycling framework to cover additional plastic-based construction materials.

The agreement also evaluates options to transition eligible Crown Asia Chemicals facilities to renewable energy through the Green Energy Option Program, while facilitating joint reporting and technical knowledge sharing between the firms.

Purchased goods and services represent the largest portion of ALI’s carbon footprint. Crown Asia Chemicals supplies PVC pipes and fittings to numerous ALI projects, including Avida Towers Centralis, Patio Madrigal, Nuveo, Greenbelt 1, Arden, The Lattice Parklinks and Gardencourt Residences. The partnership aligns with ALI’s targets to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“At Ayala Land, we have set ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and zero waste to landfill by 2030,” said Robert S. Lao, Chief Sustainability Officer of Ayala Land. “While reducing emissions in our own operations is critical, we recognize that achieving these goals requires addressing emissions across our entire supply chain, starting with the most critical materials.”

“We cannot achieve our climate ambitions alone. Our suppliers’ commitment and partnerships like the one we sign today are essential to reducing embodied carbon, advancing circularity, and driving sustainability improvements across the development sector,” Lao added.

“For us, this partnership is more than an agreement. It is an opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and turn our shared sustainability commitments into meaningful action. This is the spirit behind CROWN Pipes and our commitment to Ang Tubo na may Puso,” said Derrick P. Villanueva, President of Crown Asia Chemicals Corporation. “We are honored to accept the challenge of becoming a Green Vendor of Ayala.”
